Backstage is a performance piece that changes the arrangement of a conventional performance space where the audience only watches the performer execute a piece of choreography without any information on how this piece was constructed.
The aim is to reverse the space so that the audience watches the conductor or choreographer “control” the performer using digital ques.
The system uses Kinect technology to capture the gestures of the choreographer and translate them into visuals that are then projected onto a screen. The performer has a piece of choreography linked to each of the visual cues and then performs the one linked to the graphic displayed on the screen. Thus, the audience watches the whole process of an improv performance.
